Slot Receivers

slot

The Slot receiver is a versatile receiver who lines up on either side of the field. They can be mixed in with other receivers and must have good speed and hands. Unlike most receivers, they do not have to deal with crushing blocks and must position themselves to protect the quarterback. They can also carry the ball, just like a running back. When the quarterback wants to pass to a Slot, he will typically call them into a pre-snap motion.

They need to master just about every passing route

A slot receiver is a versatile wide receiver who can be a valuable cog in an offense. He needs to be elusive, dip and duck between defenders and have exceptional timing with the quarterback. Aside from being able to catch a pass, he also needs to be able to block.

Slot receivers are known for their quick twitch and smaller frame. They lack the size and strength to beat press coverage and are not tall enough to win contested catches. However, their quickness and quick release make them the perfect target for quarterbacks. They can break free from the line of scrimmage before any pass rushers, which makes them great for long and short passes.
