Cards may be discarded, replaced by new cards from the top of the deck, or swapped for money. Most poker games are played with a standard 52-card deck, although some variations use a shorter pack.

Poker is also played online. Internet-based poker games are very popular. Computer poker has been developed by researchers at Carnegie Mellon and the University of Auckland. Today, poker is widely popular in North America, and is the national card game of the United States. Other countries have begun to adopt poker as well. Several variations of the game, such as deuces wild and stud poker, are now available.

In most poker games, the pot is awarded to the player with the highest hand. However, there are some variations in which the pot is split between the two highest and lowest hands. These games include stud and community card poker. Typically, the highest hand of five cards beats a straight flush and a five-of-a-kind. Some games allow for bluffing, in which the player with the higher hand makes a bet in order to gain advantage over other players.

Poker is also a popular spectator sport. An innovative hole-card camera helped poker become a spectator sport. Many TV programs were based on poker, and the popularity of the game grew to the point where poker tournaments attracted large television audiences.
